Are there contact lenses that one can keep in their eyes for a month?

My friend says there are contact lenses that one can keep in their eyes for a month.

Isn’t that a health risk? I thought contacts needed to be disposed regularly.

Night and Day from Ciba have FDA approval for up to 30 nights of continuous wear. They should not be slept in if the patient does not see well, if the lenses do not feel good or the wearer’s eyes do not look good. Someone may point out that it is safer to take them out every night. This is true. It is also safer to drive 40 mph instead of 70 mph down the interstate.

Wearing contact lenses at all is already a health risk in some ways (be it small). Sleeping in lenses increases that risk (getting corneal swelling and getting an infection).

Even though recent advances in material technologies made CL’s more ‘breatheable’, there is always the risk of them clogging up over time/get dirty/or get infected.

Lenses like Purevision, Day & Night, and Biofinity are marketed as ‘sleepable’ for up to 30days.
Others like Air Optix, Oaysis, Avaira can be slept in for up to a week, but the company doesn’t recommend it (prob coz they haven’t researched it – although the material is ‘good’ enough)

In the end, Eye care Professionals have been fitting their Patients with ‘EXTENDED WEAR’ Contact lenses for a long time, so provided you look after yourself and your (correct) lenses, and have regular visits with your eye care prof, then some people can sleep in lenses for up to a month.
